Watch the colour run…
What you will need:
Colour textas
A paint brush and/or a pipette
Some paper towel
A watercolour palette
A little bit of water
What to do:
On to the paper towel you can spend some time colouring it in using the textas. You could draw something specific or be very carefree with your mark making and draw lines and shapes all over.
With a paint brush or pipette you’re going to dip it into the water and very gently dab your paint brush or squirt a bit of water on to the colours on your paper towel and observe what happens. Beautiful isn’t it! Now you see the effect it creates, keep going, trying different colours and patterns to see how the colours run and blend.
Be sure to place your wet paper towels in a spot where they can dry. You’ll want to keep these for more art experiences.
Extension ideas:
For younger children, just playing around with the textas and pipette is often a great experience by itself. You might find they put a lot of texta marks and water on their paper towel. Remind them that they need to be gentle when drawing with the markers (markers don’t like to be stomped around the page like an elephant they like to dance on their tip toes) and that big giant puddles of water wont dry so well, so little bits of water at a time is best.
Once the paper towels are dry, take the time to observe the colours. What do you notice? Younger children might like to spend some time cutting or tearing their paper up which can then be used for collage. Both of these options help to develop their fine motor skills.
Older children might like to cut their paper towel into square's to build a mosaic. Or other shapes for collage.
